Pleasant moments are often followed by an unpleasant one. My engagement was fixed with a very charming and humble personality in early October. A single sentence can’t suffice about my fiancée. So I’ll tell this later in a separate story. The time for engagement preparation was very less and I started preparing for all the things including shopping. We have only two weeks to get things done.

With a 10 to 7 job, I managed all the stuff comfortably. I also went to the most crowded area in the old Ahmedabad city for my incomplete and remaining shopping. On that day, there was still one week for my engagement. All the things were being placed in its way slowly. Two days before, I started feeling cold and cough. ???? And the same, I have an extreme headache and also losing my smelling sense on the day before my engagement.

On my engagement day, besides this losing of the smelling sense, I was perfectly fit. And I also don’t know that this (losing of smelling sense) is the symptoms of COVID19. The engagement day was well spent. I didn’t tell about this except my dear brother-in-law. But somehow my fiancée caught that I was feeling unhealthy. I told her about this when I met her personally on that day. On the very next day, I consulted my family physician and started taking prescribed medicines.

When I went to my office and told my colleagues about this, I got to know that this might be a symptom of COVID19 ???? but at that time, I was not able to do my COVID test. On the second day, I went to the nearby Urban Health Centre just behind my office and carried out the Rapid Antigen test. The rapid test result was negative. Hence my doubt was still there to be COVID affected. Therefore I insisted for the RTPCR test immediately which takes 24hrs for the result.

After doing this test, I started feeling quite healthy but still, I was not able to smell anything. I waited for 26hrs and thought that my report must be negative because the testing team has the practice to inform only those who found positive. So I joined my office in the second half where I was suggested to take enough rest.

At around 4.45PM, I received a call that my RTPCR is positive ???? and need to quarantine immediately. Hence I took leave from my office and reached home. I was thinking ???? that how this will be possible in a situation where my mother is also having bed rest due to a fracture in her leg and no one will be here to take care of me and my mother. Despite having a maid cum nurse for my mother 24*7, still, I cannot expect better care of me from her because she was hardly managing all the cares and treatments of my mother and other household stuff. But I had put faith in GOD and my quarantine period started.

These 14 days’ time was crucial but parallelly it was a golden time, too. I never ever lived far from my mother due to ups & downs related to her health. In my room, I was having everything for a good time to spend like a phone ????, laptop ????, newspaper ????, and a good internet connection. But on the other side, I don’t want to lose my real social connections. I’m not talking about social media connections but a bond with my loved ones. I was completely in conversation with them frequently.

But it was going so hard that I could not tell everyone about my 14days’ quarantine. I told about this to only a few people which was only required to be known. So I and mom did every conversation on the phone calls separately. I was feeling bad for doing this and for telling everyone that everything is fine. The reason for not telling this to everyone was only that all my well-wishers always cares for me and mom all the time and I didn’t want them to feel unhappy for us. So here I apologize to every one of them to whom I didn’t tell about this.

Parallelly, I and my fiancée got a good time to be much closer just after engagement. So this period we spent very well.  I also appreciate her and other in-laws for their moral support and care. Because of her 24*7 care, I also started caring for myself seriously. On another hand, my sister Rupal and brother-in-law Maulik Virparia were also worried and taking care of me constantly. I am very lucky to have such a caring family.

After 1-2 days from the start, my schedule of a whole day was set. Lots of food intakes, lots of phone calls & video calls, surfing on the internet, taking the steam 3 times, and so on. First 3-4 days, I was ok with my one-room living. But as time passed by, I started feeling bored and demotivated. Here you know the one reason behind this.

The second one I’ll tell you here. It was due to food. I love food so much that one can say for me In Gujarati like “Khavano Chattako!” I was not getting tasty foods as the food was being made by our maid. I used to eat food made by my mom and sister only. And at that time, I have to eat all made by the maid. I was really craving tasty food. But I always took each meal regularly to be fit against high mgs of medicines. Living against the desire for tasty food was becoming too hard for me. Then I thought that can’t I live without completing that desire which is not necessary to survive? Hence I forgot the thought about that craving. And I also tell you here that this food lover had good and tasty food only two times in the whole quarantine period. Another one is just coming ahead.

On the 5^th day, I was thinking to gift something to my fiancée and her family on the upcoming Diwali festival. I started browsing for the best hamper for them. Because I was not able to go outside and choose the best one. I didn’t want to take any risk by sending a hamper which might disappoint them. I couldn’t find one even after lots of surfing. Then I thought about one which I can trust for direct gifting and that was Cadbury Joy Deliveries! Before this, I’ve already gifted to a friend on his marriage.

And this time, on the occasion of Diwali, they introduced lots of Diwali customized hamper on which you can print a photo of the hamper receiver and send wishes to them. It’s the best I’ve used for gifting till today.

But now was the matter to choose a good photo of my fiancée along with her other members. I searched everywhere on the social media profile but couldn’t find a good one. I also didn’t want to ask for a required photo by which they can get any clue about this. Thereafter I found one photo of my fiancée and brother in law. I chose it for the hamper and ordered one at my friend’s home on the second day. Let’s see how much they like it.

On the next day when I ordered this hamper, somehow I started feeling bored and lonely because it was the 7th day of quarantine. But I managed to pass that day with a small struggle. On that day my fiancée and her family did a very good cause in their hometown. They helped the needy child to get better food that day. So I was happy on that day and also proud of them.

Suddenly, on the 8th day, my mindset changed completely. When I was taking my morning bath, few thoughts came into my mind. And lots of positivity flown in.  One of them was to write this story. This idea was also suggested by my dear brother-in-law, Maulik Virparia, at the starting of this period but somehow I took that advice lightly. But on that day, I had strongly decided to write this and also started without wasting any time. The other ideas I also want to execute in near future but I cannot tell you here because it might be surprising for someone special. On the same day, I managed to get tasty and quality food.

From that day, I used to write a few words about this daily along with other time pass things. The other two days after this, I felt too much bored in the second half of the day. Secondly, my mother was hardly managing his living without me. It was the first time when I lived separately from her for so long till the date. But I’m extremely motivated by my mother and fiancée & sister’s family. I always felt very happy after a good conversation with them.

On the 10^th day, it was Saturday. I spend my day, as usual following my quarantine routine. Hence it was a normal day but only till the evening. Why? Because I managed to get a good tasty dish of Dalbati ???? for dinner and that even was not made at my home though it was home-made. So my craving for tasty food satisfied somewhat on that day.

From the 11th day, Sunday, I started feeling happy because my quarantine period was near to get over very soon. My medicines were also near to be finished. I was eagerly waiting for the corporation health team to consult me because last time, they have consulted me 3-4 days ago. This also made my fiancée irritating how those guys were so careless in taking care of a patient having a serious infection. And in between, Sunday spent well.

On the next day, my friend called me that he received the hamper which I shipped to his home and ordered for my fiancée and her family. I saw all the photographs of it and got relaxed that it was just the same as expected. The perfect one!! But still, a few days to give it to them so I was hoping that they like it. Let see! On the other hand, I was waiting for the health team to come and consult me. They did not come yet. But on that Monday, I was completely fit except for the absence of a few percent in smelling senses.

Tuesday, 10^th November became the last day of my quarantine in the morning suddenly. Let me tell you how. When corporation guys came home for the quarantine label outside my home at the starting of this period, they mistakenly miscounted the 14 days and wrote quarantine period of 28th to 11th which counts the 15days. But when waste collection guys came to my home for COVID waste on Tuesday, they told me that this was their mistake and I can over my quarantine period tomorrow. So finally and legally, it was my last day. I felt extremely happy about that. So Count all these days I mentioned in this story as explained.

Now I’ll tell you about Independence Day. That is the first day after 14 day’s quarantine period. As usual, after taking my breakfast and my morning bath, I met my mother. As I said earlier in this story, I never lived so long far away from her. So happiness was at the peak. Then as per the COVID protocol, I went to do my rapid test at nearby UHC (Urban Health Centre). But I didn’t know that protocol itself changed in this period. The UHC guys told me that if you have any serious symptoms regarding the COVID then only we will carry out any type of test. I tried contacting other authorized people to help me but they said right to me in the morning.

Then I managed to clean some stuff that was absolutely required to be done at this festival because all the things I could not able to do at that time. I did some vacuuming, installed recently washed curtains of all windows, and cleaning of my mother’s medical equipment. I had some amazing snacked in the evening, prepared by my so caring fiancée and our beloved mother (my mother-in-law ????) which was extremely tasty ???? Yes and hence the first day after the quarantine was too good. Still, my smelling sensation is not recovered completely, I am going to take enough rest and care for a few more days which is also possible due to Diwali vacations.

I just want to say at last that this 14 day period was a golden time for me. Lots of things I have learned while living it. I knew that lots of near ones really cares for me. All of them I never want to lose in my entire life. I also understood the importance of life and all the cares which I have to include in daily routine. I don’t scare for COVID but I understood that my ignorant to that can be dangerous for me as well as others, too.

Hence I wish that all the people in this world successfully beat the COVID and also they get all the strength for living this crucial time. What all can do is to be positive (mentally) and take all the required precautions.

All the important things listed below will help you in your crucial situation if you are carrying these, of course.

Owner’s manual: This is the basic helping guide for your particular vehicle make and models. You can get lots of technical information and also learn how to perform certain things like jump-starting the car, tire changing, recommended tire pressure, etc. in a safe manner. You should always keep it in the glove compartment of the car to make it handy anytime. In case someone lost it, one can get it through the authorized dealer or in some cases online, too. Don’t forget to put a pen and paper along with that. You will thanks me later ????

Tire changer Kit: One of the most important things to carry if the tire changing kit. It should include lifting jack, spare tire with enough tire pressure, socket wrench to remove-refit the tire, hand gloves, wheel chocks to prevent the vehicle rolling, puncture repair kit for a safe side, and tire inflation pump with pressure gauge if you can afford. To know, how to replace a punctured tire with a spare wheel, you can refer to the owner’s manual.

Emergency Triangle: In case of any breakdown, this is very important that other road user can easily get to know a car breakdown to prevent any accidents. Carry emergency reflective triangle that is visible at any time of the day and night.

Jump cables of Jumpstarter: In two cases either a car is parked without started for a longer period or user left some electric consumer on when left in parking, the battery will be drawn partially or complete. In this case, the user can not be able to start the car at his/her own. At that point, a jump cable or jump starter is required. If a user can’t afford a jump starter, he/she must buy and carry jumper cables. The thing is that another vehicle is needed to jump-start a dead battery car with jump cables.

Aqua Can: Aqua can mean water can, can be useful to fill up the windshield washer fluid or in the coolant tank as well in case of a leaking cooling system. Users can reach a safe place by filling water in the coolant system as frequently as required if the cooling system is leaking.

Tow Hook: Tow hook is required when no option is left except towing of car. Whether a car is towed by a towing van of any other vehicle, tow hook is much needed. User can also carry a strong towing cable if can afford.

Fire extinguisher: All above this was the important thing and fire extinguisher is also includes in that. A car is having its own powerhouse as well as many electrical components including lots of wiring harnesses. Due to many reasons, fire can occur. A good quality fire extinguisher can help the user in this type of accident. An owner should also keep the eyes on the refill or expiry dates while having one.

Duct tape: Duct tape can be used in a car to temporarily repair any kind of damage. Duct tape is a durable tape with a sturdy backing that resists water. Hence along with some plastic repairs, It can fix a coolant leakage hose, too. Having a good quality duct tape can be useful in some crucial situations to fix something in the car.

3. Things for health and safety:

Along with the necessary documents and a few technical things, a car user should also carry a few things for health and safety while traveling. Here I describe each of them.

First Aid Kit: First and most important health companion is a good first aid kit. God knows when you are going to need it! Users should carry a good one which is having Antiseptic bandage & cream, cotton, cleaning & disinfecting liquid i.e. spirit, and other creams for rashes and burns. That’s it. And always keep eyes on the expiry date of the kit.

Hand Sanitizer: If you were not carrying a hand sanitizer until today, you should start carrying a good one (Which contains at least 60% alcohol). As everybody knows the whole world is going through a critical condition due to the COVID19 pandemic, hand sanitizer should be one of the key products to include in our daily routine. Keep it handy in your car and use every time you get in.

Torch: A rechargeable torch helps when you stuck anywhere in remote areas during the night time, finding the cause of breakdown under the engine hood, finding something under your seat any many more.

Umbrella: It’s not necessary to always carry one umbrella but in monsoon for sure. A wet yourself will make the car interior wet and that is bad for your’s and the car’s health as well.

These were my ultimate suggestion for the things which should every car owner carry along with, most of them every time. And I also assume that all the cars in the market nowadays, have enough space to take them with. According to budget, requirements, applications, you can change yours from within.

Due to this lock-down period, We all are advised to stay indoors and isolate ourselves. And so our beloved vehicles, too.

Nobody knows that for how long, this situation will continue and therefore it is extremely necessary to take care of our isolated vehicles. Because if you don’t do so, you will potentially end up paying larger repair bills in the future.

So I would like to share here a few ultimate tips in my own pattern to follow with which you can take care of your car in this lock-down period very well.

1. Start, charge and lubricate

Start your car daily to avoid battery getting discharged. If not possible to start daily, start your car once in 3-5 days and remain negative of the battery disconnected. Starting the engine will also help to lubricate all moving parts of the engine for batter life.

One can also use the trickle charger to charge the battery. Basically, trickle charger allows to charge of a fully charged battery at the rate equals to its self-discharge rate while not in use for too long.

2. Safe parking

Choose parking space wisely. Possibly park your car inside your premises. Do not park under any tree to avoid bird poop as it damages car paint. Secure parking of your car helps to avoid dust and foreign objects in the atmosphere to gather onto your car. The use of a body cover is a great recommendation.

3. Yes to gear- no to parking brakes

When you park your vehicle for a longer period, use parking with a gear engaged instead of parking brakes. This is just because when you use a mechanical parking mechanism, due to rusting, the parking brake mechanism becomes stuck.

4. Avoid getting flat spot

If you do not move your car by inch for a long period, a flat spot produces on the tire due to the continuous load of the vehicle. Flat spot reduces tire life. To avoid flat spots, drive your car once a week. Also do not forget to check and correct the inflation of all the tires including the spare wheel to the recommended PSI.

5. Clean, ventilate and avoid bad smell

Before you put your car in isolation, thoroughly clean the interior to eliminate the remaining food particles and other contaminated bacteria if any. Once in a week ventilate your car by roll down all the windows for at least five minutes.

By doing these steps, you would feel any bad smell in the interior even after long isolation days.

6. clean and shine

Regular clean and wash your car to make it shine like forever. If you don’t do this, the paint becomes dull and lost its shine which potentially lowers the look of the car.

7. Keep rodents away

Rodents can damage your car. It can damage any of the wiring harness, interior or any other important part of your car.

Use rodent repellent around your car to keep them away. Once in a week, open your engine bay and inspect all the areas and components for rodent bite marks to avoid any system failure. Even keep your eyes on the interior.

8. Pull up wipers

Wiper blade rubber stuck to the windshield or to the rear glass when they are used for a long period. This can damage your windshield and wiper blades both. To prevent this, just pull up wipers away from the windshield when it’s isolated.

So, these were few tips to maintain your car’s health during isolation in this lock-down period or whenever your vehicle is parked for a long while.

Do you wear the seat belt correctly considering the injuries in the future crash event? You will do so after reading this article and also you must do so.

This (#SeflieForSafety) initiative cum study is the second step of Volvo’s previous research EVA (Equal Vehicles for ALL). In the first part of the initiative, Volvo has shared the safety research data of more than 40 years. I will share my article discussing the first one later over here.

A three-point safety belt for occupants in the car is invented by Volvo in 1959. It’s the most important component in the protection system of the car. Since innovation, the safety belt is outstandingly improved. To make it more reliable, comfortable and enticing to use, it was required to know the user’s perception and usage of the safety belt.

To make it happen, an initiative was held in September 2019 through Instagram called SeflieForSafety. The advantage of this was, they can study variety is users and car models across the globe. The campaign was on for three weeks. A total of 740 users show the interest to be part of this and 394 of them were eligible for the analysis.

To be a part of this, one should have to post a selfie wearing a seat belt in a safely parked car using SeflieForSafety and @volvocars.

In this study, the shoulder belt position and fit were analyzed. It was a distinctive idea for further research and improvement. The study from the initiative will help to improve the ease of use and undertaking of the safety belt in the upcoming time.

In the received selfies, they got to know that 4 out of 10 users wore seat belt incorrectly. In the existence of 60 years, people still do not use it in the correct way. The safety is a few centimeters away!

What you can do for better safety is, always keep in mind a few things while wearing up the seat belt. The seat belt in your shoulder part should fit across your chest and over the shoulder but not on your arm. The lower part should fit and recline low over your hips but should not across your stomach. You should be seated with the back straight against the seat backrest. Now you are comfortable and safe.

These findings and insights can help us in our work to make cars and roads safer for all. By doing this initiative, we got to know that some user is not using a seat belt in the right way and many factors can involve for that. We can use this in our future safety development.

The aim of reducing the noisy cars on the road is set by the Department of transport. In this trial, warning and educational training programs are used to tackle this issue.

This system will only detect illegally modified exhaust and the noise caused by maintenance irregularities. It will also catch the drivers who pedal higher than the legal limits.

In this system, the noise camera will detect the noise level and verify them against suitable limits to send a warning letter to the driver of the loud vehicle. For accuracy, it will take into account the surrounding environment, speed of the road and category of the vehicle. The arrangement is set to save data on the noisy vehicle online.

The current noise limit for cars in the UK is 74dB. But wait, no fine will be charged during this trial period of seven months. They said this system will help to make the law in the future. If this trail runs successful, the system will roll out in the UK.

This new variant is hand-built under the Mercedes-AMG’s new program ‘one man one engine’ in Affalterbach, Germany at AMG’s engine factory. This will produce in a specially designed production line in which a driverless transport system is used to help the technician in making the engine. It is said that this new method can reduce production time by 20-25% enabling it to produce 140 engine per day combining both shifts.

This engine will come in two, base and s variant. Base variant produces 382hp at 6500 rpm and 354lbft of torque between 4750 to 5000 rpm. It has a peak rpm of 7200. Where S variant produces 416hp at 6750rpm and 369lbft torque in between 5000 to 5250rpm having the same redline of  7200rpm.

Both the variant have a twin-scroll turbocharger with which s variant can produce 2.1bar ( 30.5psi) of boost whereas in the variant can produce 1.9bar (27.6psi) only.

Talking the component of the engine, chill cast aluminum made engine blocks resulting in dense and high strength structure. Crank assembly made of forged steel crankshaft and forged aluminum pistons which allows low friction and high strength. Cylinders are having nano slide coating which gives mirror-like finish producing less friction.

It has both type of injectors in one single package. As per demand, direct piezo direct injectors and solenoid port injectors play their role in fuel supply.

Redefined position of injectors and spark plugs in the head and enlarged size of exhaust valves. As it has Camtronic variable exhaust valve timing, it gives full power at high rpm and better feedback at low rpm.

This engine series will debut with the all-new A45 hatchback followed by CLA45 and GLA45 model series.

As you know, I guess, the safety innovations of Volvo. POC has won 60 international safety, innovation and design awards. POC is who, which is always looking at new research, science, and innovation to bring forward new ways of thinking to reduce accidents.

Volvo Cars have focused on also protecting people outside its cars in recent years. because Volvo cars already have pedestrian detection since 2010 and cyclist detection since 2013 which is standard in all Volvo cars as a part of active safety

In this project, the number of detailed crash test is to be performed at Volvo Cars safety research facilities in Gothenburg, Sweden which will show the study of long term injuries sustained by cyclists.

In this project, the POC helmet is worn by dummy cyclists and launched towards different areas of hood of a Volvo car using different speeds and angles.

Are you thinking why this advancement in this area?

Because till the date, helmets are being tested by dropped it from various heights on different types of surfaces and not considering the actual bike to vehicle accidents. This project will help POC to design a helmet more protective and safer.  Also, this research data will also help Volvo cars for further advancement in these type of events.

“This project with POC is a good example of our pioneering spirit in safety,” said Malin Ekholm, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre and one of the company’s leading safety engineers. “We often develop new testing methods for challenging traffic scenarios. Our aim is not only to meet legal requirements or pass rating tests. Instead, we go beyond ratings, using real traffic situations to develop technology that further improves safety.”
