Do you wear the seat belt correctly considering the injuries in the future crash event? You will do so after reading this article and also you must do so.

This (#SeflieForSafety) initiative cum study is the second step of Volvo’s previous research EVA (Equal Vehicles for ALL). In the first part of the initiative, Volvo has shared the safety research data of more than 40 years. I will share my article discussing the first one later over here.

A three-point safety belt for occupants in the car is invented by Volvo in 1959. It’s the most important component in the protection system of the car. Since innovation, the safety belt is outstandingly improved. To make it more reliable, comfortable and enticing to use, it was required to know the user’s perception and usage of the safety belt.

To make it happen, an initiative was held in September 2019 through Instagram called SeflieForSafety. The advantage of this was, they can study variety is users and car models across the globe. The campaign was on for three weeks. A total of 740 users show the interest to be part of this and 394 of them were eligible for the analysis.

To be a part of this, one should have to post a selfie wearing a seat belt in a safely parked car using SeflieForSafety and @volvocars.

In this study, the shoulder belt position and fit were analyzed. It was a distinctive idea for further research and improvement. The study from the initiative will help to improve the ease of use and undertaking of the safety belt in the upcoming time.

In the received selfies, they got to know that 4 out of 10 users wore seat belt incorrectly. In the existence of 60 years, people still do not use it in the correct way. The safety is a few centimeters away!

What you can do for better safety is, always keep in mind a few things while wearing up the seat belt. The seat belt in your shoulder part should fit across your chest and over the shoulder but not on your arm. The lower part should fit and recline low over your hips but should not across your stomach. You should be seated with the back straight against the seat backrest. Now you are comfortable and safe.

These findings and insights can help us in our work to make cars and roads safer for all. By doing this initiative, we got to know that some user is not using a seat belt in the right way and many factors can involve for that. We can use this in our future safety development.

Mercedes Me is the application that connects the vehicle to the user’s phone or tablet in which a user can obtain the information relevant to their vehicle and access digital services.

There are two different methods to use this application depending on the model year of the vehicle and its hardware fittings which are Mercedes Me Adapter and Mercedes Me connect. Mercedes Me Adapter costs 5000INR exclusive GST. It connects to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth. In this case, the adapter is responsible to send the accessible vehicle data to the user. Smartphone compatibility required is, for Apple, iPhone 5, 5C, 5S, 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, SE, 7, 8, 8 Plus, X having operating system iOS 9 or higher and for Android, operating system 5 or higher. For both iOS and android, one common adapter is available.

The aim of reducing the noisy cars on the road is set by the Department of transport. In this trial, warning and educational training programs are used to tackle this issue.

This system will only detect illegally modified exhaust and the noise caused by maintenance irregularities. It will also catch the drivers who pedal higher than the legal limits.

In this system, the noise camera will detect the noise level and verify them against suitable limits to send a warning letter to the driver of the loud vehicle. For accuracy, it will take into account the surrounding environment, speed of the road and category of the vehicle. The arrangement is set to save data on the noisy vehicle online.

The current noise limit for cars in the UK is 74dB. But wait, no fine will be charged during this trial period of seven months. They said this system will help to make the law in the future. If this trail runs successful, the system will roll out in the UK.

While both the companies have their own EVs such as award-winning pure electric SUV I-pace of Jaguar Land Rover which has its own hybrid technology and i3 (2013 model) of BMW.

The strategic collaboration will build on the considerable knowledge and expertise in electrification at both companies. The agreement will enable both companies to take advantage of efficiencies arising from shared research and development and production planning as well as economies of scale from joint procurement across the supply chain, JLR said in an official statement.

This new variant is hand-built under the Mercedes-AMG’s new program ‘one man one engine’ in Affalterbach, Germany at AMG’s engine factory. This will produce in a specially designed production line in which a driverless transport system is used to help the technician in making the engine. It is said that this new method can reduce production time by 20-25% enabling it to produce 140 engine per day combining both shifts.

This engine will come in two, base and s variant. Base variant produces 382hp at 6500 rpm and 354lbft of torque between 4750 to 5000 rpm. It has a peak rpm of 7200. Where S variant produces 416hp at 6750rpm and 369lbft torque in between 5000 to 5250rpm having the same redline of  7200rpm.

Both the variant have a twin-scroll turbocharger with which s variant can produce 2.1bar ( 30.5psi) of boost whereas in the variant can produce 1.9bar (27.6psi) only.

Talking the component of the engine, chill cast aluminum made engine blocks resulting in dense and high strength structure. Crank assembly made of forged steel crankshaft and forged aluminum pistons which allows low friction and high strength. Cylinders are having nano slide coating which gives mirror-like finish producing less friction.

It has both type of injectors in one single package. As per demand, direct piezo direct injectors and solenoid port injectors play their role in fuel supply.

Redefined position of injectors and spark plugs in the head and enlarged size of exhaust valves. As it has Camtronic variable exhaust valve timing, it gives full power at high rpm and better feedback at low rpm.

This engine series will debut with the all-new A45 hatchback followed by CLA45 and GLA45 model series.

As you know, I guess, the safety innovations of Volvo. POC has won 60 international safety, innovation and design awards. POC is who, which is always looking at new research, science, and innovation to bring forward new ways of thinking to reduce accidents.

Volvo Cars have focused on also protecting people outside its cars in recent years. because Volvo cars already have pedestrian detection since 2010 and cyclist detection since 2013 which is standard in all Volvo cars as a part of active safety

In this project, the number of detailed crash test is to be performed at Volvo Cars safety research facilities in Gothenburg, Sweden which will show the study of long term injuries sustained by cyclists.

In this project, the POC helmet is worn by dummy cyclists and launched towards different areas of hood of a Volvo car using different speeds and angles.

Are you thinking why this advancement in this area?

Because till the date, helmets are being tested by dropped it from various heights on different types of surfaces and not considering the actual bike to vehicle accidents. This project will help POC to design a helmet more protective and safer.  Also, this research data will also help Volvo cars for further advancement in these type of events.

“This project with POC is a good example of our pioneering spirit in safety,” said Malin Ekholm, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre and one of the company’s leading safety engineers. “We often develop new testing methods for challenging traffic scenarios. Our aim is not only to meet legal requirements or pass rating tests. Instead, we go beyond ratings, using real traffic situations to develop technology that further improves safety.”

We hope, after this project, we might have the futuristic highly advanced bike helmet which helps in reducing the accidental injuries.

The car weighs only 3130 pounds. The top speed isn’t revealed by the company yet, but some say that the company plans to make the Jesko300 version which itself says the targeting 300 mph speed. I know only 125 units to be made.

The powerhouse is having the world’s lightest production v8 crankshaft weighing 27.6 pounds made from Swedish Dievar steel. Vibrations are decreased by using active engine mount in addition with lightweight connecting and pistons.

This 5-liter twin-turbo v8 produces 16oohp and 1106 lb-ft of torque when driven with E85 ( 85% Ethanol blended with 15% Gasoline) but with regular gasoline fuel, it falls down to 1280. It has a separate air tank and a compressor to keep boost pressure up, which help to feed 20 bar shot of air in turbocharger to eliminate the turbo lag. A pretty metal solution!

Another interesting thing is that it’a having nine-speed transmission along with seven clutches! There is a reason behind this huge number of clutches.  It only allows changing gear to the adjacent one in dual clutch transmission whereas this multi-clutch transmission allows reaching any gear from the current up to 5 gears away by giving the paddle an extra hard press.

While talking about the size, It is larger and higher than the Regera, which allows more interior space. The same suspension is improved for Jesko containing Ohlins Damper on all four wheels along with additional damper on the front axle to maintain optimum ride height. Koenigsegg Jesko has the four-wheel steering in which rear wheels turn three degrees.

Talking about the Interior and User Interface, Jesko has nine-inch infotainment system with USB inputs, Bluetooth, wireless phone charging, top-view camera, etc. All system can be updated via Koenigsegg Cloud. And updated instrument cluster! A five-inch digital screen directly mounted on steering wheel. Just wow!

Koenigsegg Jesko is something so extraordinary that you literally are amazed every time you think about it.
